Two Impalas – Imptish and Polly – hit the water for the second Warsash Spring Series race on Sunday. In a unusual but welcome turn of events, the race committee got IRC 4 away in the only patch of wind in the Solent, while the bigger boats sat and waited a mile to the East in no wind.

At the gun, Imptish got the better start and led up the first beat, but Polly managed to make up some distance on the first run – before handing the lead back in style with a slight navigational error. The next few legs unleashed a game of snakes and ladders as a windshift and building tide repeatedly turned the tables, with four different boats all holding the lead at some point.

Age-old Impala rival, Mustang 30 Erik the Red snuck around the final mark to finish first on the water, but not quite far enough ahead to beat Polly on handicap, with Imptish super-close behind.

The whole of IRC 4 had finished, and the Impalas were on their way to Cowes for an ice cream before the rest of the fleet had even had their AP removed. Thanks, race committee!

It’d be great to see some more Impalas out next week – details at www.warsashspringseries.org.uk
